Shipra Poonyth wins the 31st MCB Foundation Scholarship. The official award ceremony was held on 8th July at the MCB Centre in Port Louis. She will shortly be flying to Australia to undertake a Bachelor of Commerce with a specialisation in Actuarial Studies, at the University of Melbourne.

Shipra ranked third in the Economy stream (girls) of the 2018 Higher School Certificate (HSC) exams thus becoming eligible for the MCB Foundation Scholarship. This scholarship covers university fees, airfare, accommodation costs, school material and transport. The MCB also offers the recipient the opportunity of doing an internship within the Group so as it to build stronger ties with the entity as well as with the financial community.

A brilliant track record

Throughout her years at the college Dr Maurice Curé State College, Shipra has scored very good grades. And, she has, at the HSC exams obtained straight A’s for the five subjects for which she competed, namely Economics, Accounting, Mathematics, French and General Paper. She also ranked first at the national level in Mathematics and Accounting. She had previously climbed onto the highest step of the O Level podium in Mathematics and Economics.

While Shipra has an obvious propensity for studies, she has also distinguished herself on the extra-curricular front. She was an executive board member her school’s Integrity Club, and participated in the Model United Nations Zonal and National Competitions in 2017 as well as in the Senior Citizenship Essay Competition that year. Shipra is also keen on philosophical books, practicing yoga, dancing and jogging, and she is involved in charitable activities. In a nutshell, she perfectly illustrates the saying: "a healthy mind in a healthy body".

A continuous commitment

The MCB Foundation Scholarship was launched in 1988 when the MCB Foundation was created. Since then, it has been annually awarded to the student ranked immediately after the laureates in the Economics stream of the Higher School Certificate. The scholarship’s objective is to allow students to obtain a first degree, in the tertiary institution of their choice, in one of the following fields: Economics, Accounting, Computer Science or Finance.
